Situated at the feet of the Castle of Charles V and the ancient part of the city, the port embraces part of the residential and commercial centre, which is easily and quickly reachable on foot. The main transportation network is easily accessible by car, including the Sant'Anna Airport, located just 16 km away.

The port is located on the east coast of Calabria, in the South of Italy just along the route from Adriatic to Tyrrhenian Sea. Moreover the port of Crotone is situated in front of Greece: the nearest Greek Island is 125 marine miles far.

The port is divided into two (adjacent but not communicating) docks known as the North Dock and the South Dock. The former is used for commercial traffic, opens towards the northwest, and is 200 meters wide with a sounding depth of approximately 9 meters.  The latter is designated as a tourist and fishing port, with an opening towards the south-southwest, fifty meters in width, with 2.5-meter sounding depths.

Normally the anchorage sea currents head in a NORTH-SOUTH (180°) direction. The current from north to south reaches a maximum velocity of 0.4/0.5 knots, while from south to north the currents are NN. Within the port, the current is influenced by tide or wind and can reach speeds of 0.5 knots at the port entrance, and 0.3 inside the port.
